Hiking Seceda – The Dolomites’ Dramatic Ridgeline

The Dolomites are a landscape of contrasts — jagged peaks, soft meadows, and endless horizons. Among them, Seceda stands out for its dramatic ridgeline and sweeping alpine views. Whether reached by gondola or a long hike, standing atop Seceda feels like touching the sky — wild, silent, and unforgettable.

Seceda is one of those places that feels almost unreal — a sharp, grassy ridge dropping off into endless alpine peaks. You can reach the top either by hiking all the way up from Ortisei, which is a long and demanding trail, or by taking the gondola and cable car straight to the summit. The ride is quick, smooth, and costs about €50 round trip (tickets: seceda.it).

Once at the top, you can wander along gentle trails with breathtaking views in every direction. The famous photo spots near the ridge now require a €5 entrance fee, but it’s worth it — especially if you catch the morning light hitting the peaks. Everything here lies high up on the mountain, so even short walks feel like real alpine adventures.

If you prefer to hike rather than take the gondola, there are several trails on Komoot with different lengths and difficulty levels. Some routes start directly in Ortisei and take several hours with steep climbs, while others are shorter loop trails that begin at the gondola station. It’s easy to customize your route depending on how much time and energy you have.

When we visited in early October, we were surprised to find the landscape already covered in snow. It gave the ridgeline a completely different mood — quiet, bright, and almost otherworldly. Some trails were icy but still manageable with good shoes, and the crisp air made the views even more striking.

Tips: Take the first gondola up in the morning to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before the crowds arrive. Bring warm layers — even on sunny days, it’s cold and windy at the top. If you want to save money, consider hiking up and taking the gondola down. Don’t miss a stop at one of the mountain huts for hot chocolate or a traditional Tyrolean lunch — the views are unforgettable.
